Seven Arrows Elementary and the Roots & Wings TK Center will host a communitywide Family Science Day on Sunday, May 21, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Aldersgate Campus.
“Join us for an afternoon of family fun and science,” read a flyer for the event.
Activities for the day include makerspace and robotics, nature conservation, Lego and Duplo contest, family science workshops, and food and refreshments.
Attendees are invited to bring their “most creative Duplo or Lego creation” for the contest, which will be open to participants ages 2 and up. All entries will be put on display, with prizes awarded to the “best creations.”
There will also be a garbage collection contest, where attendees can pick up trash off the street or beach, and bring it in. Bags will be weighed, with prizes awarded to the heaviest ones.
There will be informational booths present, including Resilient Palisades, Los Angeles Mushroom Society, birdwatching specialist Ann Flower, Pacific Palisades Garden Club, Temescal Canyon Association, Palisades Forestry Committee and more.
Workshops with a teacher facilitator for parents and children include Jane’s Journey (“using pulley science and collaboration to move Jane Goodall from her lab to the field”), Ollie Robotics (“using remote control to guide Ollie robots around an obstacle course”) and Physics with Hovercraft and Buzzing Bugs (“build, test and redesign a desktop hovercraft and a flying buzzing bug).
There will also be coordinator-facilitated activities with Two Bit Circus, including Ultimate Recycling Machine, Make-n-Take Activity: Thaumatrope and Make-n-Take Activity: Eco-Vehicles.
“Learn about the persistence of vision with an optical illusion toy from the 19th century,” according to information about the Thaumatrope. “Make two pictures appear as one using upcycled materials and a quick twirl of the fingers.”
“Please note, this event and the workshops are designed for parents to attend with their children,” according to information shared ahead of the event. “Childcare is not provided. Sign-ups for the workshops will take place when you arrive and are first-come first-serve.”
Family Science Day will take place at 925 Haverford Avenue. For more information or to sign up, visit bit.ly/familyscienceday.
