Two-time City individual golf champion Anna Song brought her ‘A’ game north to Pebble Beach and it was almost good enough to win her the CIF state championship on November 15.
The Palisades High junior bogeyed two of the first four holes, but was steady from there, making four birdies and 10 pars over the final 14 holes to card a two-under par 69, three shots behind winner Zoe Jiamanukoonkit of Torrey Pines, to take second at Poppy Hills Golf Course. The only other player in the field of 54 to finish under par was Kacey Li of Temple CIty, who was third at -1.
Song did not qualify for the state finals last fall but she did as a freshman in 2021 and was one stroke off the lead before faltering on the last three holes to finish 18th at +2, also at Poppy Hills. Song earned her spot in this year’s state tournament by tying for eighth with a two-under at the SoCal Regionals Nov. 9 at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills.
The runner-up at regionals was Song’s friend and Highlands resident Kaila Elsayegh, who finished 5-under then lost on the first playoff hole to Donina Zhou of team champion Santa Margarita. Elsayegh, a junior at Marlborough, tied for sixth at state with an even par 71.
