In the days leading up to a grand soiree at The Peninsula Beverly Hills in honor of Madame Sylvia Wu’s 100th birthday, I sat down with the iconic restauranteur for a cup of Chinese tea and trip down memory lane.
Madame Wu is a celebrated restauranteur, author and philanthropist, known and loved for her legendary restaurant on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica opened in 1959. For 37 years she hosted Hollywood’s top celebrities & world dignitaries.
While the famed double doors closed nearly two decades ago, Madame Wu’s hospitable nature and coveted dishes like Chinese Chicken Salad and Wu’s Beef are far from forgotten. Closing in on her 100th birthday, the charming and eternally well dressed Madame shared one birthday wish — “I think I’d like to open another restaurant.”
