Jeffrey Lash has yet to be officially identified by the Los Angeles County medical examiner and is still considered a “John Doe.”
Even so, criminal defense attorney Harland Braun said no less than nine people alleging to be cousins of Lash have stepped forward since his death and are jockeying for his estate.
Braun, who is representing Lash’s fiancée Catherine Nebron, said everyone wants a piece of his assets and they are currently in closed-door discussions about who will receive Lash’s money and portions of his gun collection.
In July, authorities recovered over 1,200 firearms, six-and-a-half tons of ammunition and $230,000 in cash from the Highlands condo where Lash and Nebron lived.
“The guns are currently being held by LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) and are pending release,” Braun said. “In this particular case there’s significant money involved and these nine cousins have stepped forward since his death claiming family ties and wanting in on everything.”
Braun said the individuals are “coming out of the woodwork.”
An estate attorney confirmed with the Palisadian-Post that she is representing Lash’s heirs in “the probate matter.”
They aren’t alone. Braun said Nebron has claim to Lash’s estate as well.
“Nebron’s condominium was extensively damaged during the time Lash lived with her, about $300,000 worth of damages. She supported and provided him with money that he in turn used to purchase guns so she definitely has a stake,” Braun told the Post.
Detectives told the Post more assets could be discovered in the coming weeks, depending on where else Lash lived and what else he could have been stashing.
Since Lash’s death, Braun has hired a private investigator to inspect and monitor the assets.
“The P.I. is supervising as everything gets sorted out at the property to have it placed into storage,” Braun said. “The police have followed up with Catherine as well and she is cooperating fully. She testified and gave up her rights to answer every single question on Thursday, Aug. 6.”
According to Braun, Nebron is planning on moving back into the Highlands condo and living in the Palisades indefinitely.
“She is not currently living at the condo because they are still in the process of investigating the property that belonged to Jeffrey and removing it from Catherine’s house,” Braun said. “She will probably move back after it gets cleaned up and revamped. They are putting in a new air conditioner and fixing it up.”
