Thomas “Tom” Long Flattery, born Nov. 14, 1922, in Detroit, Michigan, to Thomas J. and Rosemary (Long) Flattery, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at his home in Pacific Palisades at the age of 94.
Tom attended University of Detroit and in 1941, joined the Enlisted Reserve Corps, completing basic training at Camp Roberts, California.
Following his USMA army training program, Tom was admitted to West Point in July 1944. After graduation in 1947, he returned to Grosse Pointe, Michigan, where he married Gloria M. Hughes on June 10, 1947. Together, they had six children.
They moved to the Palisades in August 1952.
He graduated UCLA law school and was admitted to practice law in 1955; to the Connecticut Bar in 1983 and the New York Bar in 1984.
He had numerous affiliations with California State Bar, and has authored articles on corporate and patent law.
Tom entered corporate law, serving in key positions for top ranking corporations, including McCulloch Corporation, Technicolor Inc., Schick Inc., and Automation Industries/Penn Central Corp.
They relocated to Greenwich, Connecticut from 1979 to 1986.
Gloria passed away October 1984 of breast cancer.
Tom met Barbara Balfour on a visit to Hawaii, and they were married in October 1986.
In 1993, Tom’s focus moved to the field of alternative dispute resolution. He served on the American Arbitration Association, NASD Board of Arbitrators and temporary judge assignments for LA Municipal Courts.
Tom is predeceased by Gloria Flattery and survived by his family: wife, Barbara; daughters, Connie Flattery, Dianne Lee and Betsy Sprecher; sons, Michael, Tom and Jerry Flattery; grandchildren, Patrick Bagnall, Wendy Anderson and Molly McQueen Flattery, Kristin Lee Watumull and Jeffrey Lee; great-granddaughters, Jade and Jemma Watumull, and Nova Rea Anderson; step-daughters, Laura Lundquist, Linda Flint and Bill Balfour; grandchildren, Tom and Barbara Lundquist, Sara and Jacob Flint, and Lauren and Jack Balfour.
Mass was celebrated at Corpus Christi Church in the Palisades on Saturday, Nov. 11.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the John Wayne Cancer Center, Santa Monica.
