The book features in-depth tales of nine Hong Kong families by Salaff, professor of sociology, emerita, at the University of Toronto, and Light, professor emeritus in the Department of Sociology at UCLA. Their multifaceted study began in 1991, when migration was attributed primarily to the political anxieties of the time and the notion that Hong Kong residents were seeking a better life in the West.
