Canyon Charter Elementary School has been ranked number nine by U.S. News & World Report’s Best California Elementary Schools rankings, with an overall score of 99.84 out of 100.
U.S. News & World Report ranks schools based on their performance on state-required tests, how well they prepare their students and more.
“At Canyon Charter Elementary, 91% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 94% scored at or above that level for reading,” according to the report. “Compared with the district, the school did better in math and better in reading … Canyon Charter Elementary did better in math and better in reading in this metric compared with students across the state.”
The school was among the top 10 that featured North Star Academy, La Jolla Elementary, William Faria Elementary, Manchester Gate, White Oaks Elementary, Valentine Elementary, Yu Ming Charter and Murdock-Portal Elementary.
Canyon was also ranked number one in Los Angeles Unified School District elementary schools and number three in California charter elementary schools.
Canyon was previously named a California Distinguished School for 2023 in an announcement made Friday, January 6. It was among nine elementary schools in LAUSD and 356 elementary schools statewide to be recognized.
“The entire Canyon Charter School community is honored to receive this outstanding award,” Canyon Principal Nicole Sheard said to the Palisadian-Post in January. “We strive to create a positive environment where our students will thrive. This recognition makes us very proud of our efforts, and know that we will continue to offer a top-notch education for our students to thrive and be successful, not just academically, but as well-rounded citizens as well.”
