After going digital for two years in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Walk With Love is returning to Palisades Recreation Center for an in-person component to raise funds and awareness to support breast cancer research on Sunday, May 15.
Hosted each year by the Dr. Susan Love Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, this year’s fundraising goal is $150,000.
“Over the past 13 years, together we have raised millions of dollars for breast cancer research through our annual Walk With Love,” according to a statement from Founder and Chief Visionary Officer Dr. Susan Love. “This year, as the No. 1 breast cancer research organization in the U.S., we can achieve even more.”
In 2021, the event—temporarily renamed Move With Love—raised more than $127,000. Over 500 movers from around the globe participated from 42 states and eight countries. Those who participated were encouraged to move whatever way they preferred, whether it was walking, running, spinning, golfing, dancing.
Like years past, participants in 2022 are able to register as either an individual or a team. They can register to either walk or run the 5K course, which follows Alma Real, Toyopa, Altata drives and others in the area. There will also be an option to participate virtually.
“As of 2020, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world in women, surpassing lung cancer with 2.3 million new cases,” according to information shared by the foundation. “Now more than ever we need research to end this devastating disease.”
Each registered participant will receive a Walk With Love bundle, which features a limited-edition T-shirt, custom walker’s bib and social media toolkit to help share the experience. VIP participants will receive a collectible pin.
Registration for the walk opens at 8:30 a.m., followed by a Walk With Love Kick-Off and Walker Address at 9:45 a.m. The walk will start at 10 a.m. In lieu of walking, participants are able to instead partake in yoga on the lawn, which also has a 10 a.m. start.
“When you participate in Walk With Love, the money you raise supports collaborative, cutting-edge research focused on improving the lives of people impacted by this disease,” according to the Walk With Love website.
As the Palisadian-Post went to print Tuesday evening, more than $72,000 had been raised so far in 2022. Funds raised through this year’s walk will go directly to supporting the foundation’s Exploring the Ductal Anatomy project—which has a goal of utilizing “speed of sound 3D ultrasounds to visualize the distribution of ducts within a particular breast as well as to locate early lesions within a duct.” This enables sampling the fluid in the duct and the installation of intraductal therapy, which will “better treat the disease right where it starts.”
“I am so excited to bring the walk back home to the Palisades again,” Love shared with the Post. “It’s been too long since we could be together, and what better way to come together than for a cause that matters—finding an end to breast cancer.”
