Palisades High wrestlers are presented postseason awards by coach Aldo Juliano.
Palisades High wrestling team members and their families packed The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club on the Universal CityWalk on Friday night for a fundraiser called “Cure the Coach” to aid Dolphins head coach Randy Aguirre, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma (a grade IV brain tumor) in May and just underwent six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatment.
Assistant coach Aldo Juliano performed on the show along with several other stand-up comedians, including Paul Revere Middle School wrestling coach Adam Hunter, who was a four-time Class A New England champion at Hyde School in Bath, Maine.
The 29-year-old Aguirre, who started the Dolphins’ program in 2011 and led them to the inaugural City dual championship in February, was in good spirits.
“The treatment kind of caught up to me, but it’s great seeing all the guys,” he said. “I’ve got a tough fight ahead.”
A 50/50 raffle collected over $1,100 and the Pali High wrestling program is hoping to raise $20,000 by Sept. 7. Juliano is planning another “Cure the Coach” fundraiser at the same place Sept. 6. To make a donation, click here or email support@fundrazr.com.
A Pali High awards banquet preceded the fundraiser and upon being handed the MVP trophy on stage, heavyweight Kenny Jones said: “This is for Coach Aldo and Coach Aguirre — the real MVPs.”
